Solar Decathlon

U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon is an international student competition in building sustainable solar-powered houses. The goal of the competition is to support sustainable and innovative architecture development and to introduce this concept to the public. The final of U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon 2013 will take place 3 -13 of October in Orange County Great Park, Irvine, California.

An international student competition organized by the U.S. Department of Energy and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory demonstrates that an intelligent building solution is capable of ensuring a pleasant interior environment and, at the same time, to generate enough thermal and electric energy for the household needs.

20 selected university teams from all over the world are challenged to design, build and operate an energy self-sufficient solar house. The buildings come into being on university grounds and the finished houses will be presented to the public during a two-week display, where the buildings will be judged in 10 disciplines.

The first Solar Decathlon was held in 2002 and until today, 132 teams from prominent world universities participated in it. Within the last year’s competition in the course of 10 days more than 357.000 individual house visits, and 32 workshops, attended by the laic and professional public, took place.

In 2013, for the first time in history of the competition, the final dispaly will take place somewhere else than in Washington D.C. Orange County Great Park in Irvine, California will host the 6th event. Orange County Great Park is located near Los Angeles, in place of a former American Marine Corps base, El Toro. The air force base, whose Flying Bull patch was designed by Walt Disney, had been built in 1942 on the biggest bean plantations of North America. The local government plans redevelopment of the whole area and its recreational use. The Solar Decathlon will be the first international event taking place in a newly developing ecological park.

During the final exhibition, being held between 3rd and 13th October in Orange County Great Park, Irvine, the AIR House will be open to the public for free, and public tours with expert commentary will take place.

Since 2010, the Solar Decathlon has also been organized in Europe. The first competition outside the United States, the Solar Decathlon Europe, took place in Madrid in June 2010. The third edition will take place in Franec, Versailles in 2014. Learn more about Solar Decathlon 2014. The first Solar Decathlon competition in Asia will be Solar Decathlon China.The three competitions have similar principles, but they are independently organized and have some differences regarding regulations and contests.
